When operating on slopes, used forestry excavators face multiple risks—including side-slipping, tipping over, and structural overloading—risks that are particularly pronounced in forested areas characterized by steep gradients and soft ground conditions. Many users, after purchasing used equipment, tend to focus solely on price and tonnage while overlooking the critical safety details associated with slope operations. Slope Assessment and Route Planning
Before ascending a slope, it is imperative to use an inclinometer (slope meter) or visual estimation to determine whether the gradient falls within the equipment’s permissible limits (generally, small to medium-sized used forestry equipment can operate relatively safely on slopes of up to 30°; however, specific limits should always be strictly adhered to as stipulated in the machine’s Operation Manual).
When planning an operational route, one should prioritize “zigzag” paths or gentle gradients, avoiding direct vertical ascents or descents on steep slopes. Additionally, the ground surface should be cleared of tree roots, rocks, standing water, and loose soil to prevent track slippage or the machine becoming bogged down.
Machine Posture and Work Attachment Positioning
When traveling on a slope, one should strive to keep the center of mass of the upper structure aligned with the lower tracks. Avoid prolonged slewing (rotating) or swinging the upper structure through large angles while on the slope, as this significantly increases the risk of tipping over.
During actual operations, the boom and arm should be kept as retracted as possible, and the bucket should be maintained in a low position, close to the machine body. Avoid lifting heavy loads to high elevations or performing operations at extreme lateral angles, as these actions increase the overturning moment.
Slope Stabilization and Parking Protocols
When making a brief stop on a steep incline, select a relatively level patch of ground. If necessary, utilize wide-track shoes or deploy anti-slip mats to increase the ground contact area and enhance friction.
The start-up and shut-down phases are periods with a high incidence of accidents; therefore, when parking on a slope, it is recommended to fully retract the work attachments, securely lock the cab door, and engage the parking brake to prevent accidents caused by inadvertent operation or the machine sliding.
Personnel Coordination and Emergency Response Plans
When operating on slopes, a designated individual must be present on-site to serve as a commander and lookout, thereby preventing unauthorized turning or downhill travel. Additionally, a safety perimeter must be established to prevent other personnel or machinery from entering the hazardous zone.
Prior to commencing operations, the braking system, hydraulic circuits, track tension, and structural components must be inspected for cracks. Particular attention should be paid to rust, cracks, and maintenance history—especially in the case of second hand forestry excavators—to ensure overall stability and reliability during slope operations.
